Simmi Areff is rated as one of the top up-and-coming comedians in the country and he has the credentials to prove it. Go ahead and ask him…or ask Forbes Africa Magazine who recently profiled Simmi as “worth keeping an eye out for.”
Durban audiences are in for a treat as Simmi bring his one-man show, Stay At Home Son, to the stage at The Loft at The Playhouse Company from the 27th to the 31st October 2015.
The show is about a young Muslim boy who stays with his parents and the various experiences and observations he has with them and other people growing up.
Simmi grew up in a Muslim part of Durban and moved up to Johannesburg in 2011 with R30 in his pocket and a dream of being a stand-up comedian. He performed in bars and clubs. Simmi recalls how once he and his flatmates were so poor that all they could afford for supper was a lollipop.
The tables turned in Simmi’s favour and his journey has seen him touring extensively throughout the country and recently had a very successful sold out one-man show at the Joburg Theatre. He is often seen opening for Riaad Moosa and has also shared the stage with the likes of John Vlismas, Trevor Noah, Eugene Khoza, Chester Missing & Conrad Koch, Mark Banks, Marc Lottering, Trevor Gumbi, Loyiso Gola, Kagiso Lediga and many more.
He has also appeared on the Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola and Comedy Central’s Live at Parker’s. He has also dabbled in the art of radio before taking on comedy full time. He was a producer on 947’s Breakfast Express and part of the Big Breakfast team on East Coast Radio.
Tickets are available through Computicket.
