The Canon SWD Cricket team recorded mixed success at the inaugural Africa T20 Cup completion when they were in action at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein the past weekend.  Free State, who were unbeaten, qualified as the fourth team together with Northerns, KwaZulu Natal Inland and KwaZulu Natal.

In the opening match of the weekend SWD, with their score at 102/2 after 14 overs were in a strong position against Free State thanks to a good stand between Waldo Lategan (43 from 34 balls) and SA Engelbrecht (32) but they slumped to 129/8.  Free State (130/3) recorded a seven wicket bonus point victory for reaching the target in the 15th over.

Against the Gauteng Strikers the SWD bowling attack – led by Vernon Philander (2/18), Mthinkosi Shezi (2/15) and SA Engelbrecht (2/16) – secured a 19 runs victory for SWD when Gauteng ended at 92/9.  SWD posted in modest total of 111/7.  Andrew Puttick (44 from 40 balls) and Engelbrecht (37 from 41 balls) were the only batsmen to made significant contributions.

In the last match SWD disappointingly lost by 1 run against Kenya (119 all out) after they finish at 118/5.   Engelbrecht (3/23) was again in fine form with the ball whilst Luthando Mnyanda (29) and Andrew Puttick (40) made good contributions with the bat.
