The SWD cricket team bounced back with a brilliant 21 runs victory in the one day match in the Cricket South Africa provincial competition after 3 wicket defeat against North West the past weekend. In a very unlike scenario at the REC Ground in Oudtshoorn more than fifty overs were lost in the three day match due to rain and bad light.
North West were given a scare after being set only 110 for victory in the fourth innings scraped home at 111/7 with Gurshwin Rabie taking 5/48. Remarkably, SWD had two bowlers taking fifers (Marcello Piedt got 5/86 in the first innings) and had the match’s lone centurion in Niel Hornbuckle (142 off 196 balls, 16 fours and a six) but still finished up on the losing side. SWD, who suffered their second consecutive defeat in Sunfoil Three Day competition, only managed to score 122 in their first innings and were under pressure chasing the game. North West compiled 272 in their first innings for a lead of 150. In spite of Hornbuckle’s maiden first class hundred SWD’s second innings recovery of 272 was not enough as North West won by three wickets with only 9 balls left in the match.
A brilliant performance in the One Day match saw SWD home by 21 runs as they move to the top of the table with two wins in two matches. SWD posted 241/5 thanks to a fine unbeaten partnership of 112 runs for the 6th wicket between Brendon Louw (66 from 88 balls – no boundaries) and Pieter Stuurman (61* from 76 balls; 1×6, 5×4).
North West were dismissed for 220 after 48.1 overs thanks to three brilliant runs out involving Brendon Louw as well as a fine bowling performance by Siyabonga Booi (4/56 in 9.1 overs). Luthando Mnyanda picked up 2/43 (in 10 overs)
