Sammy-Joe Avontuur playing in his 71st first-class match was, together with Glenton Stuurman, responsible for a 137 run partnership on the first day of the Cricket South Africa Sunfoil Cup Three Day match between SWD and Border at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn. This partnership, scored from 243 balls, gave SWD a life-line after the home side was against the ropes at 65/6.

SWD were bowled out in the 94th over for a credible first innings total of 299.

It took Avontuur (142; 284 balls, 2×6, 14×4) 2289 days between his third and second career first class hundred – and a new career best – whilst the knock of 86 (from 123 balls; 1×6, 13×4) by Stuurman was also a career best. Avontuur’s previous (and second first-class ton) came on 15 October 2009 against Western Province at Northerns Goodwood in Cape Town – the same match in which a former coach, Garry Hampson took charge of the SWD team.

Avontuur and stand-in captain, Gurshwin Rabie (15*), also contributed in a 58 run stand for the 10th wicket. The SWD first class 7th wicket partnership of 158 runs involving Adrian McLaren and Phabama Fojela (SWD vs KwaZulu-Natal in the 2012/13 season) is still unbroken.
