The SWD men’s cricket team travelled to Kimberly to face Northern Cape at the Diamond Oval in a Sunfoil 3-Day Cup match.
SWD captain, Sammy-Joe Avontuur, won the toss and sent the home side in to bat.
Northern Cape were in trouble at 36/3 with Marcello Piedt [2 wickets] and Siyabonga Booi [ 1 wicket] making the early inroads. The home side’s middle order provided some resistance, but they lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 130 in 46.3 overs.
Gurshwin Rabie [3/21] and Glenton Stuurman [3/36] were the pick of the bowlers. Piedt and Booi finished with two wickets apiece.
SWD’s reply got off to a promising start with Neil Hornbuckle compiling a patient 37 off 82 balls and Hanno Kotze a more aggressive 49 off 63 balls. Unfortunately, the middle order failed to capitalise and SWD finished the day on 141/7 – a slender lead of 11 runs with three wickets standing.
The match resumes tomorrow.
