Sanlam Musiekfeesat US Woordfees celebrates musical masterpieces

Cape Town, 3 March 2016: All of South Africa’s literary and music enthusiasts will make their way to the energetic streets of Stellenbosch for the annual Stellenbosch University Woordfees, from 4 – 13 March 2016.

2Following the success of the inaugural introduction of the concept “Every word is a masterpiece” last year –Musiekfees sponsor Sanlam puts the spotlight on the masters behind the music.

Four short documentaries each focused on a South African music icon and the inspiration behind their lyrics will be showcased at the Sanlam Musiekfees. These include revealing who the ‘mystic boer’ is and how failed relationships inspire Al Bair’s lyrics. Artistic documentaries with beautiful archive photos and gig footage are included in the never-before-seen “Every-word-is-a-masterpiece” short documentaries and will be screened in unique complimentary cinemas that are freely accessible.

Festivalgoers are invited to sit back and experience these short documentaries that bring the artist’s key lyrics to life. Ushers will welcome Hunter Kennedy and Die Heuwels  Fantasties fans to a tree cinema where they can lay back, gaze up, put on noise-cancelling wifi headphones and be taken on a “meersterstuk” journey that unpacks the story behind the song “Klein Tambotieboom”.

Other documentaries include:

  • On the main festival grounds, festivalgoers can make their way down the blue carpet that leads to a bird-watching structure. Here they will be given binoculars to search for the infamous ‘mystic boer’ while watching Valiant Swart’s documentary, based on his song “Die Mystic Boer”.
  • Hop on a rusty motorcycle and you’ll be taken on a journey to learn about ChurchilNaudé’s fresh take on Anton Goosen’s iconic song “Boy van die suburbs”.
  • Festivalgoers are encouraged to approach the vintage arcade game machines on the main festival grounds unveiling more about the band Al Bairre, their playful lyrics and how love is sometimes just a game.
