SA third at International Tri-Nations Test

AYRSHIRE, Scotland (9 June 2016) – South Africa clinched third in the annual International Tri-Nations Test as Australia and Scotland shared the spoils at Rowallan Castle Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland on Thursday.

Lali Stander – The Australian A-side and the leading team from the host nation finished at two-under-par 424.

The South African A-team – comprising Andre Nel, Kyle McClatchie, Tristen Strydom and Aubrey Beckley – composed successive rounds of 215 to finish six shots back on 430.

Southern Cape’s Nel set the tone with an opening three-under-par 68 on day one and Ekurhuleni duo McClatchie and Strydom contributed respective rounds of 71 and 76 to help South Africa place fourth. In round two, McClatchie fired a 68, while Nel returned a 72 and Strydom added 75. Beckley from North West carded non-counting rounds of 78 and 79.

South Africa B-team included Southern Cape’s Jovan Rebula and Gauteng North trio James du Preez, Albert Venter and Jason Smith, who combined for two rounds of 224 to post a 36-hole total of 448.

Australian Cameron Davis celebrated a fine event with a course record 65 in round one and 70 in round two to win the Individual Competition on seven-under-par 135.

Reigning Sanlam SA Amateur champion Craig Ross from Kirkhill finished three strokes back in second, McClatchie took third on 139 and Nel finished a further stroke adrift in fourth.

Following the International Tri-Nations Test, the Golf RSA National Squad members made a made a quick detour to Royal Troon, which will stage 145th Open Championship next month.

From Royal Troon the group headed to South Wales where they will prepare for the next stop on the United Kingdom tour – the 121th Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club and Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club from 13-18 June.
