The purpose of these training sessions is to improve the level of food safety in our communities, by sharing knowledge of legal requirements and responsibilities, good operational procedures and awareness of food safety issues.

On Wednesday, 08 June 2016, EHPs in Knysna, Ms Mendy Tyhawana, Mr Mthetho Sithonga and Mr Linden Herwels, facilitated an informal food traders training session in the Knysna Town Library. Twenty two (22) food handlers, including local food vendors from Hornlee and the Knysna Taxi Rank, attended the session.

The 5 Keys to Safer Food, as well as health and hygiene practices in an informal environment were the two focus points of the training session. The programme was conducted in an interactive manner, during which the food handlers responded in an enthusiastic way. In conclusion, participants were awarded with incentives, such as cooler boxes, containers and buckets, presented by the Community Services Portfolio Chairperson, Cllr Henry McCombi, and the Manager: Municipal Health Services, Mr Johan Compion.
