SWD Cricket this week announced the preliminary squad of twenty players for the Africa Twenty 20 Cup and it is evident that the Oudtshoorn-based team is setting its sights on the title this season.
The wicket-keeper/batsman, Dane Vilas, was a regular member of the Proteas test team the past season whilst Dane Piedt, who also played test cricket for South Africa will be a key spin bowler on the wicket at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn. The Cape Cobra pace bowler, Dane Paterson, who will take the new ball – is very exciting bowler in domestic cricket in South Africa and showed his class in the T20 format. The experienced Andrew Puttick, who played one limited over test for South Africa will again be in the SWD camp for the 2016 campaign.
SWD will host pool B of the draw over the weekend 16-18 September at the REC in Oudtshoorn will have tough competition in the pool with defending champions, Northerns as well as Kenya and Northern Cape. According to SWD Cricket CEO, Albertus Kennedy, it was confirmed this week by Cricket South Africa and Supersport that both the two fixtures on the Saturday (17th) and Sunday (18th) will be broadcasted live by Supersport.
The rules of the competition stipulates that two U/21 players of which one must be u/19 must be on the playing field the exciting school boys Jean du Plessis (Glenwood House) and Levin Muller (Outeniqua) was drawn into the squad. Du Plessis represented the SA Colts Schools team in 2015.
The group of twenty (20) players – to be reduced to 13 – are: Jongile Kilani, Sammy-Joe Avontuur, Otneill Baartman, Siyabonga Booi, Brendon Louw, Neil Hornbuckle, Marcello Piedt, Hanno Kotze, Nelson Setimani, Gurshwin Rabie, Glenton Stuurman, Dane Piedt, Dane Vilas, Chris Marrow, Justin Jordaan, Jean du Plessis, Levin Muller and Mthobeli Bandingawo, Dane Paterson and Andrew Puttick.
