café Roux, Noordhoek’s much-loved family restaurant and live music venue, is celebrating its 10th birthday in the month of August.
Over the last 4 years, café Roux has grown into one of SA’s premier and most popular live music and comedy venues. Having always had a strong music culture at the restaurant, things were taken up a gear by creating an intimate night-time live entertainment space. Staging the best SA artists every week, together with up-and-coming exciting new talent, the lineup is very diverse and there is something for everyone. The audience can enjoy a delicious supper at the venue and then sit back and watch their favourite artist up-close and personal in this uniquely intimate 100-seater venue. In association with Wolftrap Wine, café Roux has been proud to host a wide range of amazing SA musicians and comedians over the years: Nik Rabinowitz, Ard Matthews, Prime Circle, Kurt Darren, Arno Carstens, Jack Parow, Barry Hilton, Watershed, Toya Delazy, Dan Patlansky, Matthew Mole & many many more.
Brother-and-sister team Paul & Lindi Le Roux, together with Paul’s wife Bern, opened this family-run business when they fell in love with Noordhoek. Bern spent two years at the pass and entrenched her amazing Karoo-style cooking in the kitchen. café Roux continues to serve wholesome, generous, uncomplicated cafe-style food, aimed at the whole family. Bern adds a few changes to the menu every season and empowers the kitchen staff to learn new exciting dishes to go onto the weekly specials board. Bern has moved on to write two award-winning cookbooks – Prickly Pears & Pomegranates” and “Roots, Shoots & Leaves”and is now the editor of Conde Nast Gourmet Magazine.
On Saturday and Sunday afternoons, patrons can enjoy gentle live acoustic music over a late lunch. Bordering on a large open playground, café Roux has always had a strong focus on kids. A small kids menu and miniature benches are available for the little people as well as clip-on high chairs for babies. Kiddies parties are catered for in the summer months and the annual Kiddies Xmas Party is a hugely popular event.
Paul and Lindi are joined by an amazing team of staff who notoriously go the extra mile. Current managers, Chantal, Deo and Erin, who were all part of the original team of waiters, have grown into the loyal, passionate and much-loved family that is café Roux. They are supported by a solid team of FOH and kitchen staff most of whom have been with the company since inception. café Roux is well-known for the warm, attentive and genuine service it offers.

“café Roux is one of the very few live venues in South Africa that ‘gets it’. To them, as it should be to every other venue, the music and the artists come first. Great respect is shown when an artist performs on the night and it starts with a simple sign on each table saying ‘Shhhh, let’s listen to the music…’ Thank you for setting the bar so high when it comes to the simple art of music appreciation. Last time I played there I probably experienced my most sincere standing ovation of my career to date. It really is an honour to play at this venue” ARD MATTHEWS
I grew up playing covers and background music at café Roux. I loved it! Every time I go back to play a full on show there it always feels like home. The audience is always super-receptive, there is always a rad vibe. The level of professional makes café Roux‘s shows a highlight! MATTHEW MOLE
“Cafe Roux is one of the most intimate venues around. Great place to play and I always feel at home there!” DAN PATLANSKY
People often ask if we prefer performing for bigger audiences or smaller audiences. The bottom line is it`s not about the size of the audience…It`s about the response from the audience. This is what keeps a band on the road and keeps a band motivated! Some of our greatest shows have been at café Roux. We love the crowds that support us and the hospitality from the management and staff is unparalleled. Thank you café Roux and here’s to many more shows under your cozy roof!” WATERSHED
“café Roux is one of my favourite gigs not only in South Africa but anywhere. Such a pleasure to play a venue that takes care of all the elements that go into running a successful music venue. Great staff, great food and a set-up for musicians that make it easy to perform. And the ever friendly and efficient manager Deo is, like me, from Fish Hoek High School!” ROBIN AULD
“Great area, great food and a very attentive and appreciative audience, always makes this one of my favourite gigs in Cape Town.” ALBERT FROST
