Cllr Memory Booysen is the seventh Executive Mayor of Eden District Municipality (Eden DM), since the district’s establishment in 2001.
Councillor Booysen will serve the district from 2016 until 2021 and he will provide strategic direction for Eden DM. With a passion for people and knowledge of how local government operates, he is responsible for identifying and developing criteria to place the district on a progressive path, as well as to implement strategies and programmes that will boost service delivery.
Councillor Booysen was born in Hankey, Eastern Cape, on 28 June 1969. He is a father of three daughters and a husband to Estelle Booysen. His father, John, passed on in 1980 and his mother, Buyiswa, lives in Kwanokuthula, Plettenberg Bay. Cllr Booysen draws inspiration from his mother who offered her unwavering support to her children by giving them the best in life and education she could afford. Her wisdom continues to add value to his life and plays a key role in keeping him grounded.
Councillor Booysen matriculated from Humansdorp Secondary High in 1987 and studied for a Diploma in Education at the University of the Western Cape. He then went on to study Hotel Management at Wits Technikon. Cllr Booysen worked for the Southern Sun Hotel Group for 12 years until entering the political sphere in 2002. He was elected as a Bitou Ward Councillor in 2006 and, five years later, he was elected as the Executive Mayor of Bitou Municipality and finished his term in 2016.
