(Cape Town, December 2016) Thursday, 1 December 2016 saw the first ever Top Italian Wines Roadshow in Cape Town, bringing 60 wineries to South Africa, hosted by Gambero Rosso, a multimedia brand and guide in the Italian food and wine industry.
The event took place at The Lookout, at the V&A Waterfront and just under 500 guests arrived to taste the premium wines of Italy. Together with a walkaround tasting, three educational masterclasses were presented in an intimate setting with 30 participants. Marco Sabellico & Eleonora Guerini (Chief & Senior Editor Guida dei Vini) took everyone through the Italian wines through the regions, starting with the North region, Centre region and ending off with the South region.
Guests at the roadshow experienced something quite unique as most of the Italian wines showcased aren’t available to purchase in South Africa and were especially brought in for the event, while there were also a few that are in fact available here. Italy is the Jurassic park of viticulture thanks to its unique heritage of native grapes (over 1000). The event showcased a superb selection of more than 250 wines covering all the Italian wine regions. Delicious canapes of cheeses, breads, cured meats, fudge, brownies and nougat were available for people to nibble on throughout the event, that ran from 12:00 to 19:30.
2016 marks Gambero Rosso’s 30th year of delivering exceptional multimedia showcasing one of the food and wine capitals in the world, to its optimum Italian market, through broadcast television, print and digital mediums. Every year the Top Italian Wines Roadshow visits six countries but this year additional countries were added and the roadshow stopped at South Africa, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, Australia, Bangkok, Palm Springs, Havana, Sao Paulo and Dubai. Allowing the world to experience the best Italian wines, which otherwise would of been out of reach.
During this extraordinary global tour, Gambero Rosso will present awards to the best chefs chosen by the First Guide to Italian restaurants around the world. Yesterday, Magica Roma’s chefs/owners Ezio De Biaggi and Franco Zezia and chef Georgio Nava from Carne SA were honoured and awarded best Italian Restaurants in Cape Town. Chosen for their utmost dedication to promoting Italy’s wine and food heritage in South Africa.
“Italian wine and food exports continue to show an extraordinary upward trend, a successful corner of the Italian economy,” explains Tiina Eriksson, Director of International Business & Events at Gambero Rosso. “The credit for a good part of this growth is due to our flavour ambassadors: chefs, sommeliers, distributors of certified and top quality products. The guide has taken account of restaurants, pizzerias and wine bars dedicated to Italian food and wine culture. Product traceability, certification, respect for ingredients and the depth of the wine list were important considerations.”
