SWD to host international cricket next week

South Western Districts Cricket is ready to host three limited over internationals between the South African and Sri Lankan u/19 teams this coming week.

Aviskha Fernando (Sri Lanka) and Wiaan Mulder (South Africa), the respective captains shook hands ahead of the three match One Day International Series between the U/19 teams of the two countries that will be contested on the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Mulder played at the same venue in early January when he represented the Lions in a Sunfoil Series match against the Cape Cobras. Next to the captains are the two coaches, Roy Dias of Sri Lanka and Lawrence Mahatlane of South Africa. Dias, is a former Sri Lanka senior team coach and player. He represented his country in 20 test matches and 58 ODI’s between 1982 and 1987

The three one day internationals will be played at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn on Wednesday (1st), Friday (3rd) and Sunday (5th) of February 2017.

Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s coach, Lawrence Mahatlane is keen on his young charges learning how to master the basics of the game as they prepare to begin a three-match Youth One-Day International (ODI) series starting at Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn on Wednesday.

The hosts suffered a 77-run loss to the visitors in the final of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Youth Triangular Series in Boland Park on Saturday. This after they dominated the competition, which also included Zimbabwe, who claimed the only win over the home side during the six-match round-robin stage.

South Africa beat the Sri Lankans comprehensively in all three meetings prior to the final and will be anxious to bounce back in Oudtshoorn.

Mahatlane wants to see improvement.  “For me it’s about adaptability and making sure we adjust to the conditions and play accordingly,” he said. “I think sometimes what happens is we do get a bit over excited and try different things.

South Africa, who also take on the young Asian side on Friday and Sunday at the same venue, have bowled the same opponents out each time they faced them over the past two weeks. Mahatlane expects much of the same in the Western Cape town, saying he would be counting on their fast men to deliver.

“It looks like it will have a bit of pace,” he added. “The Academy week was here last week and there were good results for seamers, so it will be interesting to see how we unleash some of our young fast men on a wicket that suits them.”

The South African team is Wiaan Mulder (captain), Matthew Breetzke, Ruan de Swardt, Jesse Christensen, Jade de Klerk, Wandile Makwetu, Akhona Mnyaka, Muhammed Mayet, Jason Niemand, Michael Cohen, Kenan Smith, Siphamandla Krweqe, Raynard van Tonder, Lutho Sipamla and Mitchell van Buuren.

Entrance will be free.  Matches will start at 10:00 daily.
