Mixed results for SWD vs Border in East London

SWD’s struggling form in the Sunfoil Cup Three Day competition continued this weekend as they went down by 7 wickets to Border at Buffalo Park in East London.

It was again SWD’s batting – especially in the first innings – that led them down as they were bowled out for only 111 in their first innings and failing to collect any batting bonus points.  Border replied with 250 for a lead of 139 runs.

In their second innings, things went a litter better as they posted 224 thanks to good contributions by Neil Hornbuckle (69) and Andrea Agathagelou (49).  Border (86/3) easily chased down the winning target for a 7-wicket victory.

SWD will enter their last match in the Sunfoil Cup Three Day competition in the last position in Pool A (55.46 points after nine matches) but they can avoid the wooden spoon with a better performance when they take on the North-West Dragons at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom (23-25 March).  They are 5.98 points behind KwaZulu-Natal who completed their fixtures for the season.

Four SWD players are however producing outstanding individual performances in a struggling season.  Andrea Agathagelou (710 runs at an average of 78.88 with four centuries) is 4th on the batting averages and he also scored the 4th most runs in the competition.  The wicket-keeper batsman, Brendon Louw, with 33 dismissals is the top wicket-keeper in the series but he also scored the 5th most runs (699 runs with an average of 41.11).  Glenton Stuurman (33 wickets at 22.23) bagged the third most wickets and Otneill Baartman (27 wickets at 20.62) the fifth most wickets.
