SWD’s disappointing season has come to an end when they suffered defeats in the Sunfoil Cup Three Day- and Cricket South Africa Limited over match against North West at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom the past weekend.
In the three-day match, the visitors posted 226 thanks to contributions by Neil Hornbuckle (42), Hanno Kotze (68) and the debutant Todd Walker (60). North West made an impressive start with an opening stand of 165 involving a century by Janneman Malan (106) but SWD managed to reduced North West to 272 thanks to a six-wicket haul by Nkululeko Serami (6/73).
With a deficit of 46 runs on the first innings, the SWD batting unit again failed as they were bowled out for 172 with only Walker (41) that made an impression. SWD, however, set-up a brave fight in defending a modest target of 127 and thanks to a brilliant bowling display by Glenton Stuurman (6/37) they had North West in trouble at 99/7 before the men from Potchefstroom held their nerves to reach the winning target (130/7) for a three-wicket victory.
In the one-day match on Sunday André Malan (123) scored a magnificent century for North West (260/6) while Serami (3/47) was the SWD bowling hero. In the SWD innings the batsmen failed again and with the score at 50/6 the writing was on the wall. SWD was bowled out for 127 with Siyabonga Booi (45) the top runs scorer as North West claimed a 133 runs bonus point won.
SWD ended 6th out of 7 in Pool A in both the Three- and One Day competitions.
Four SWD players are however producing outstanding individual performances in a struggling season. Andrea Agathagelou (710 runs at an average of 78.88 with four centuries) is 4th on the batting averages. Brendon Louw, with 35 dismissals is the top wicket keeper in the series but he also scored the 5th most runs (733 runs with anaverage of 38.57). Glenton Stuurman (39 wickets at 21.00) bagged the third most wickets and Otneill Baartman 27 wickets at 20.62).
