The Tour de Braai (7 – 12 May) is a five-day gravel ride from George to Swellendam, conceptualised by Jan Braai, the man behind the National Braai Day initiative.
Taking in some of the most scenic passes in the Klein Karoo and the Western Cape, the Tour de Braai offers riders the opportunity to cycle at leisure and then enjoy their post-ride surroundings to the maximum.
As the name suggests, the Tour is also about lighting a fire and enjoying a braai.
Day 2 of the Tour de Braai took riders from just outside Oudtshoorn to the port capital of Calitzdorp. The 90km ride set out towards the Cango Caves before turning towards Calitzdorp via Kruisrivier and the Groenfontein Valley. Once in Calitzdorp, riders were treated to lunch and port tasting at Boplaas before making their way to De Krans for the evening braai. Elite mountain biker Erik Kleinhans, who is on the Tour de Braai, says it is something that can only help grow cycling and tourism in the region.
“It’s great to combine my favourite food pastime – braaing – with the sport that I love,” says the multiple stage race champion. “It’s great to be out in nature and the being in such a fantastic area that is renowned for good food and stunning scenery.”
