Tour de Braai puts wind in your sails

The fourth day of the 2017 Tour de Braai was another scenic ride for the 20 participants braving the inaugural event. Leaving the warmth and cosy hospitality of the Rooiberg Lodge in the Klein Karoo, riders stopped in at Vanwyksdorp for morning coffee before continuing to Kweekkraal Guest Farm just outside Riversdale.

Thanks to a strong headwind, the ride was tougher than expected, but riders were still able to enjoy the incredible scenery of Garcia Pass – and a lamb shawarma once at the top of the pass – en route to Riversdale.

Tomorrow the Tour de Braai will conclude with the final ride – Kweekkraal to Swellendam, with a lunch braai in Suurbraak.

The Tour de Braai (7 – 12 May) is a five-day gravel ride from George to Swellendam, conceptualised by Jan Braai, the man behind the National Braai Day initiative. Taking in some of the most scenic passes in the Klein Karoo and the Western Cape, the Tour de Braai offers riders the opportunity to cycle at leisure and then enjoy their post-ride surroundings to the maximum. As the name suggests, the Tour is also about lighting a fire and enjoying a braai.  Photographer credit: Craig Kolesky
