Korreltjie Kantel CD Launch Tour May 2017

[Afrikaans heel onder] A unique musical interpretation of the love affair between two iconic writers.  Plettenberg Bay – The Barnyard | Saturday 27th May – 7.30pm – R 130.  George – Arts Theatre | Sunday 28th May – 3.30pm – R 80 (members) / R 100 (general)

In association with Concerts SA, Iluminar Productions present the nationwide album launch tour of Korreltjie Kantel.

A RSG Arts Festival Commission, Korreltjie Kantel is an Afrikaans music production paying tribute to the love affair, writing relationship and works of poet Ingrid Jonker and novelist Andre P. Brink.

Three unexpected and distinctly different musicians – Luna Paige, Jamie Jupiter and Nick Turner– have come together to interpret and compose music to Ingrid Jonker poems. These poems are interwoven with dramatic and musical interpretations of the love letters that passed between Andre P. Brink and Ingrid Jonker as published in Flame in the Snow (2015). A poignant and intimate portrayal of longing, forbidden fruit, destruction and the fearless delight of love.

After a successful debut on the RSG Arts Festival 2015, and staged productions at Woordfees and KKNK (2016) and some tailoring and replacements, this gripping musical interpretation of the love affair between these two writers in the 60’s is finally getting a full album release with a national tour. Leader and producer Luna Paige says: “The material we work with in this show reminds us how powerful love can be… and that it knows no bounds”.

Luna Paige made her debut in the music industry in 1999 when she was invited to record with and be a part of an all-female music production, Eve: Women in the garden of song. Here she sang alongside 4 other women (including Lesley Rae-Dowling). Music lovers sat up and noticed this young songwriter and her exciting music career began. Since then Luna has released 5 original albums (4 English, 1 Afrikaans) and 2 Afrikaans singles (2016). She has performed at numerous popular arts and music festivals across country. She regularly tours across South Africa and has also been invited to perform in countries such as the Netherlands, Mozambique and Namibia. End of 2015 Luna established her own production company and invited artist manager Denise Barnes to be her partner. Iluminar Productions has since then developed musical productions ‘Die Ander Konsert’ (2015), ‘Korreltjie Kantel’ (2016), ‘Konnexi’ (2017) and ‘In Her Blues’ (2017).

Nick Turner was one of the key songwriters and musicians in the 90’s band Sons of Trout. This band made huge waves during their time and played across country and at all the top rock festivals during that time. Nick also formed part of a duo band with Sons of Trout colleague Mike Renny. Their band Mechanic very soon made waves (for their unique African fusion styles) and they decided to head out to New York. Nick lived and worked in New York while in the band Mechanic for many years (almost 10 years) before he decided to come back home to South Africa. While he was there Mechanic performed regularly in New York and other states and also did a tour to Japan, where they were received very well. Back in South Africa – Nick teaches guitar to children and is involved in the cultural heritage music project Music van de Caab at Solms Delta. He just released his first debut solo album (Home and Secure, 2016) and forms part of music productions ‘Die Ander Konsert’ and ‘Korreltjie Kantel’. His music is influenced by local music styles and has a truly unique South African flavour to it.

During the 90’s Jamie Jupiter played with the glam-rock sensation – The Honeymoon Suites. Nowadays Jamie Jupiter performs solo as a mind-blowing one man act by looping an impressive array of ‘rootsy’ percussion and indigenous instruments with guitar and bass. He creates a sound that is both modern and authentic. Jamie has toured the UK, USA, Canada and Reunion Island and toured to Germany with The African Music Workshop Ensemble. He won a Fleur du Cap for best cabaret 2009 with the mock country show “Angels on Horseback”. He is able to stretch his musical muscles from playing traditional African music, delectable-dub, high-kicking gypsy grooves, fun-filled disco-funk, and ecstatic techno tribal trance. He agreed to join the ‘Korreltjie Kantel’ production and will be putting new music to Ingrid Jonker poems for this show.

Korreltjie Kantel Tour is supported by the Music Mobility Fund, a funding mechanism administered by Concerts SA which offers opportunities for South African musicians to undertake live music tours. Additional support is provided by RSG Arts, ClemenGold and Simonsig.

Concerts SA is a joint South African/Norwegian initiative housed under the auspices of the Stakeholder Hub within the SAMRO Foundation; it receives financial, administrative and technical support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the SAMRO Foundation and Concerts Norway. Working with musicians, promoters, venue owners and audiences, the project aims to support live music in South Africa by finding and implementing ways to create a vibrant and viable live music circuit.
