POLOKWANE, 23 May 2017 – Gauteng’s bid to win the Swiss Team Trophy for a third successive year was dealt a heavy blow on Tuesday as Ekurhuleni and KwaZulu-Natal overhauled the defending champions in the 72 Hole Teams Championship in Polokwane.
Gauteng A began the second round with a two shot lead over KwaZulu-Natal and a three stroke advantage over Ekurhuleni, but the two-time champions are on the back foot heading into the final round at Polokwane Golf Club on Wednesday.
Gauteng A protected their overnight advantage with a second round 142 after Woo-Ju Son and Kaleigh Telfer both returned 71s, however, a hefty 151 in the third round from a 74 from Telfer and 77 from Son saw the team slip to third on 437.
Meanwhile Casandra Hall and Caitlyn Macnab pushed Ekurhuleni to the front of the pack alongside KwaZulu-Natal on 434.
The Ekurhuleni pair combined for a second round 143 and third round 144, while the KwaZulu-Natal duo posted successive rounds of 144.
Hall aced the par three eighth on her way to a second round 73 and she carded 74 in round three and 15-year-old Macnab boosted the side with successive rounds of 70.
KwaZulu-Natal’s Michaela Fletcher is making the most of her break from the University of Memphis.
The Maritzburg golfer anchored the team with a second round 72 and third round 68, while Berger from Kloof returned rounds of 72 and 75 to take the side to joint first.
Gauteng C launched their bid for the Challenge Trophy with a 153 and also had a two shot overnight advantage, but Kaiyuree Moodley and Kelsey Nicholas ensured that the team will start the final round with a colossal 15-shot lead.
Moodley, the reigning Nomads SA Girls Rose Bowl champion, bounced back after an expensive 84 in the first round to register rounds of 74 and 70 and Nicholas shot 73 in the second round and 78 in round three to keep Gauteng C in ascendancy.
Fletcher also overtook Son for the top spot in the Individual Competition.
The KwaZulu-Natal golfer moved to three under 213 and has a two shot lead over Macnab. Telfer sits in third on two over, while Hall shares fourth at three over with Son and Symone Henriques from Gauteng B. Zethu Myeki from Border and Berger are tied for seventh at five over.
Ekurhuleni 12-year-old Kiera Floyd fired rounds of 76, 72 and 75 to break into the top 10 and shares ninth spot at seven over with Gauteng B’s Chiara Contomathios.
