Fire Situation Report at 7:00 on 7-06-2017

  1. De Hoop/ Kouga fire (Uniondale area)- Eden staff deployed at this fire 
  • The western flank at “die poort” has been contained, teams are busy with mopping up.
  • The Eastern flank is high in the mountains at Mr Nico Gerber but no immediate danger exist.
  • The Southern Flank has been contained no open flames visible at this point in time.
  1. Hooggekraal fire (Karatara) – Sedgefield fire service on scene 
  • No feedback yet due to challenge in terms of radio communication with the staff on scene. 
  1. Kruisfontein fire (Knysna) – Knysna fire and rescue deployed at this fire 
  • Fire in plantation completely out of control.
  • 13 houses at Springveld evacuated.
  • Knysna has requested all available resources at adjacent local authorities to come and assist.
  • MTO will also send all available resources to this fire. 
  1. Kruisrivier fire (Hessequa) – Hessequa fire and rescue teams on scene 
  • Fire in mountain no threat at this point in time; 
  1. Herbertsdale fire (Mossel Bay) –  Eden Riversdale team as well as Mossel Bay on scene 
  • No feedback yet 
  1. Ebb and Flow- Wildernis (George) – George fire on scene 
  • One house on N2 side of Touw river lost in fire.
  1. Gwaiing R102(George) – George fire on route to scene

EDEN DMC- ACTIVATION REPORT AT 6:00 ON 7-06-2017

The Eden Disaster Management Centre JOC was activated at 4:30 this morning after a notification by Gideon van Lill from MTO that a fire has been reported in the Kruisfontein plantation near Dam se Bos-Knysna.

Since midnight the wind speed has been causing some damages in the region nl:

  1. George :
  • The roofs of 12 houses in Pacaltsdorp, as well as Borchards blew off;
  • Some trees has been uprooted, but no major routes has been blocked thus far;
  • The fire in Harold where staff were fighting a fire yesterday has been brought under control, but teams still monitor for flare-ups;

Major concern at De Hoop where staff from the Eden DM fire and rescue service has been fighting a major veldt fire since Monday night. No lives or structures lost yet;

  1. Mossel Bay: 
  • No major structural damages reported yet, Fire and Disaster Management staff will re-assess at sunrise;
  • The fire in Friemersheim where staff were fighting a fire yesterday has been brought under control, but teams still monitor for flare-ups;
  1. Kannaland:
  • The windows of Lewis Stores were broken by wind and the gutters of the fire station was damaged;
  • Fire and Disaster Management staff will re-assess at sunrise;
  1. Hessequa: 
  • At 3:00 this morning Mr. Voss reported that visibility on the Stilbaai road is very bad due to sand blowing in the area. The road has not been closed yet, but they will monitor the situation; 
  1. Knysna: 
  • No major structural damages reported yet, Fire and Disaster Management staff will re-assess at sunrise; 

Major concern is the fire at Kruisfontein plantation, 13 houses at Springveld to be evacuated and N2 has been closed between Knysna and Bitou;

  1. Oudtshoorn:
  • No major structural damages reported yet, Fire and Disaster Management staff will re-assess at sunrise; 
  1. Bitou:

No major structural damages reported yet, Fire and Disaster Management staff will re-assess at sunrise;
