Zip Zap and CPO: a symphonic Journey

The Zip Zap Circus and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) are bringing you the most breath-taking show in town.

Three shows will take place on 10, 11 and 12 November 2017 at the Artscape Opera House.  With spectacular choreography, dazzling trapeze displays, sensational aerial silks and wild jugglers all set to the full symphonic sound of South Africa’s oldest orchestra, the show is set to amaze and delight.

Journey will take you from the classics to the space age, and while the CPO plays works ranging from Wagner to Williams under the direction of the charismatic Brandon Phillips, the passionate performers of Zip Zap will spin, tumble and fly through the air.

“We are delighted with this collaboration,” says Brent van Rensburg, Zip Zap’s Co-founder and director of the show. “When the Cirque de la Symphonie came to town, Zip Zap presented the curtain-raiser and now we have developed our own spectacle. When one adds the technical opportunities of the Opera House at Artscape, the sky is the limit.”

Journey is also a fundraiser for the expansion of Zip Zap into new premises in Salt River. “This new space will allow more children to benefit from the circus school’s eight programmes. As a Non Profit Organisation, Zip Zap provides all lessons at no cost. The 1’500 children come from all walks of life and learn an array of life skills while improving their circus techniques. We are extremely grateful also to the CPO for giving their support and time to our goal of inspiring kids for life,” adds van Rensburg.

About the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra

The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra is arguably the most versatile and active orchestra on the continent of Africa, contributing handsomely to Cape Town’s global status and appeal. Founded in 1914 as the Cape Town Municipal Orchestra, the CPO is financially and culturally sustainable, attracting some of the leading international artists of our time. A multi-functional orchestra, the CPO delivers a world-class orchestra service to all communities in the region, participating in festivals and concerts across all genres of music. Apart from regular symphony concerts presented in the historical century-old Cape Town City Hall, the CPO also performs with Cape Town Opera and Cape Town City Ballet, adding up to a staggering 140 performances per year. It has several award-winning recordings for various European labels to its name, and recently returned from a highly successful concert tour of the United States of America. The orchestra runs a vast outreach and community programme that includes two youth orchestras and grassroots training projects in various townships around Cape Town. Many of the young musicians it trains are beginning to take their place on the concert hall stage.
