MOSSEL BAY, 27 September 2017 – Gauteng A made the best possible start to their title defence in the 57th South African Women’s Inter-Provincial as KwaZulu-Natal charged to the top of the B-Section Log with a clean sweep at Mossel Bay Golf Club on Wednesday.
A-SECTION
Gauteng A threw down the gauntlet with a nine shot victory in the Seeding Qualifier on Tuesday and started their hat-trick bid just as they mean to finish on day one of the match play stage.
The two-time defending champions overpowered Southern Cape, limiting the host union to just half a point in the first round foursomes and a whitewash in the singles to lead the Division 1 log.
Symone Henriques and Chiara Contomathios won 6 & 4, while Woo-Ju Son and Kajal Mistry edged out Sandra Winter and Azelia Meichtry 1-up to set the tone for the team in the foursomes. Desiree Geldenhuys and Jodie Duminy from Southern Cape won the 17th hole and halved the 18th to draw with Kaiyuree Moodley and Eleonora Galletti.
Moodley and Contomathios stormed out of the gates in the singles with 6 & 5 wins to stretch the lead to four points. Galletti, Henriques, Mistry and Son added four more for a runaway 8-5 – 0.5 result.
The battle between Western Province A and Ekurhuleni was decisively tighter.
Western Province A trailed Ekurhuleni by 1 point after losing one and halving two games in the foursomes, but winning performances by Ashleigh Mills, Jordan Rothman and Vicki Traut gave the side some much-needed momentum.
Ekurhuleni’s Carmen Taljaard beat Katia Schaff 2-up to narrow the gap to 4 – 3, and it was down to Kaylah Williams and Zayb Fredericks for Western Province and Sarah Bouch and Casandra Hall for Ekurhuleni to determine the outcome.
Williams was 1-down to Bouch, but she won 16 to level the game. She went 1-up at 17, but Bouch hit back at the final hole to square the match. Fredericks sealed the 5 & 4 victory for Western Province A when she won the last hole to halve with Hall.
In Division 2, Border swept to a 3 – 1 lead in the foursomes and Millie Zim-Dondashe, Demi Flanagan and Luzan Esterhuizen racked up the points in the singles for a 6 – 3 win over Boland.
Frankie Bosman, Larissa du Preez and Lenanda van der Watt took care of business in the singles for Gauteng North A to secure a 5.5 – 3.5 result against Gauteng B.
