The annual Suidoosterfees is in its 15th year of existence and will take place in the heart of Cape Town from 26 April to 1 May, 2018.
Next year’s festival will have the theme “Fantastiese 15/Fabulous 15/Zemikhosi 15” and aims to bring communities from across the Western Cape together to celebrate and promote local arts.
The festival is also hosting its fourth annual talent search, with the aim of identifying promising young artists between the ages of 9-25 from local communities. From here, these young artists are given a platform to develop their talent and to receive mentorship from professional artists and industry veterans. The talent search is looking for artists in the categories classical, contemporary and alternative.
The first five finalists from the talent search in Paarl have already been chosen and will be going through to the semi-final on 10 March 2018 at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre. They are Shockwaves (dance group), Ryan Popper (dance), Nicole Ashley McThomas (drama and dance), Keanan Swarts (drama), and Rouxné Muller (vocals).
The talent search will be heading to the Breytenbach Centre in Wellington on Saturday, 14 October and to the Guga S’Thebe Arts and Cultural Centre in Langa on Saturday, 21 October from 10:00 – 16:00. Other venues to be visited are:
- The Magnet Theatre in Observatory on Saturday, 28 October 2017
- The Stage in Bellville on Saturday, 4 November 2017
For the qualifying rounds, judges include the well-known actor Sne Dladla, performing artist Riaan Visman, acclaimed director Lindi Smit and classical music aficionado Louis du Preez. The finals will take place on 28 April, 2018 as part of the annual Suidoosterfees in Cape Town.
