Pool A, Sunfoil 3-Day Cup at Pretoria, Mar 1-3 2018
SWD’s run-scoring hero, Obus Pienaar, who recorded his 4th first class century of the season, secured a credible draw for SWD in their Sunfoil Cup Three Day match against Northerns that was played at the TUT Oval in Pretoria. Pienaar amassed 186 facing 272 balls and hitting 24 boundaries.
After winning the toss and opted to bat, SWD was dismissed for on 86 (33.2 overs) in their first innings. Corbin Bosch (4/11) and Thomas Kaber (3/32) were the main destroyers for Northerns.
The SWD bowlers responded with aggression and had Northerns with their backs against the wall with their first innings total at 71/6 but Migael Pretorius, who batted at number 9, posted an unbeaten 81 (from 112 balls; 1×6, 8×4) to enable the home side to reach 242 (all out) – a lead of 146 runs. Marcello Piedt (4/67) continued his good form with the ball and was well supported by Mthobeli Bangindawo (2/44) and Tsepo Ndwandwa (2/40).
SWD made a nervous start to their second innings an was under pressure at 81/3 but Jean du Plessis (76; 214 balls, 6×4) and Pienaar put together 111 runs for the 4th wicket. Pienaar was joined by an aggressive Hanno Kotze (94 from 91 balls, 4×6, 8×4) for a 5th wicket stand of 189 runs before SWD declared their second innings at 439/8.
With a winning target of 284 Northern opted the safe route and ended at 96/2 as the match ended in a draw.
Pienaar is currently in prolific form with the bat. The former SA U/19 and Grey College learner is topping the batting averages in Sunfoil Three Day competition series with an average of 112.28 (786 runs with 4 hundreds and 3 fifties). Kotze has an equally successful season with the bat – scoring 583 runs at an average of 52.84.
Pool A, CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge at Centurion, Mar 4 2018
SWD, on Sunday, continued their upward curve in their performances when they defeated Northerns – one of the powerhouses in provincial cricket in South Africa –at Supersport Park in Centurion in the Cricket SA Provincial One Day competition.
It was indeed a great team effort but Obus Pienaar’s match winning innings of 75 (from 71 balls; 1×6, 6×4) paved the way for a SWD victory. Being asked to bat SWD posted 242/8 with Hanno Kotze (37), Jean du Plessis (27), Letlotle Sesele (27) and Daniel Sincuba (27) – all offering vital support to Pienaar.
The SWD bowlers maintained the pressure on the home team and in spite of contributions by Rubin Hermann (49) and Thomas Kaber (47*) Northerns failed to get the edge with the rain that threated to bring an early end to proceedings. With their total at 140/5 (after 33 overs) the match was abandoned due to rain with SWD who were 13 runs ahead according to the Duckworth Lewis formula.
