Klawer Wine Cellar’s delicious dessert wines for the winter

The weather has changed dramatically in South Africa as we pass through autumn and transition into winter.

Certain wines are typically associated with winter, hence the popularity of enjoying a glass of red next to a crackling fire. You do, however, have a few more options! During this winter season, the best thing you can do is relax by the fireplace and warm up with a glass of Klawer Wines’ dessert fare.  

Klawer Wine Cellar is situated in the Namaqua West Coast and offers a variety of wines made from grapes sourced in the Olifants River Valley. Their wide range of dessert wines is an unmissable treat among wine lovers in the area, as well as international tourists.

Pieter van Aarde, a winemaker at Klawer Wine Cellar, is of the opinion that variety is the spice of life.

“South Africa has such a diverse population, and because our wines are proudly South African, we believe in creating a different wine for everybody’s palate,” says Pieter.

Although dessert wine is not a common everyday drinking wine, Klawer Wines ensures that their dessert wine will be a regular after your next dinner or with each family gathering. Unique flavours are offered in each of the six different dessert wines.

According to Franci, their Hanepoot is an ultimate winner. It is delicious wine best enjoyed outdoors. The rich and satisfying taste will leave all wine enthusiasts speechless yet satisfied. Klawer Wines produced their Cape Vintage for the first time in 2015 and since then, it has received praise as a dessert wine that tastes sensational alongside chocolate as well as dried fruits and nuts.

Andries Blake, CEO at Klawer Wine Cellar, is proud of the Muscadel dessert wines and says the Olifants River Valley has a very unique climate and that is exactly why their Muscadel wines taste so fantastic with concentrated undertones of fruit. Under the main variety Muscat de Frontignan, Klawer Wines have a Red and White Muscadel. While the White Muscadel goes fantastically with desserts like chocolate mousse, the Red Muscadel pairs well with strawberry ice-cream.

“You can’t miss their White Muscadel! What a treat! They have a nice tasting room and amazing value for money wines with interesting flavours coming out of this climatic region!” says Doug Hoernle, a recent visitor to Klawer Wine Cellar.

Another favourite is the African Ruby Rooibos Vermouth, a unique and proudly South African wine infused with buchu and rooibos. This wine won a silver medal at the 2017 Michelangelo Awards and is loved locally as well as internationally! Erin from the United States is absolutely crazy about the African Ruby Vermouth, and wrote the following on her blog – The World Wanderer: “It was unique and would make the perfect after dinner drink at home. I’m not one to cart around bottles of wine when I travel, but I will say that I couldn’t be happier that I brought home the African Ruby. Now when I am missing Africa, which is more than I care to admit, I can sit down with my pictures, a glass of African Ruby, and I am immediately transported back to that night.”

Klawer Wines’ flagship range, Villa Esposto, also has a magnificent dessert wine as part of their bouquet. The 2016 Muscat d’ Alexandrie Straw Wine is their “sunshine in a bottle” and this unique wine style has been cultivated for years. Grapes from dry farmed bush vines, planted in 1969, are carefully selected before being laid on straw mats for drying. After two weeks this concentrated Muscat d’Alexandrie nectar is gently pressed and fermented in French oak barrels until the time is right and they find their final resting place in this beautiful bottle.

In 2017 this wine scored a whopping 93 points from Tim Atkin, the incredible British master of wine and award winning wine journalist, during his visit to the Namaqua West Coast.  Klawer Wine Cellar offers a complimentary wine tasting at their tasting room located on the N7 Cape Namibia Route outside Klawer.
