George – The 7th Heritage Tour, which visited the West Coast to see the Namaqualand flowers in bloom, was in one word Fantastic!
The 51 participants in 27 vehicles, all manufactured between 1815 and 1975, arrived at Matroosberg 4×4 private game reserve near Ceres on 21 September. On 22 September they travelled via Malmesbury, Darling and Yzerfontein to Velddrif, where they spent the night.
On 23 September they travelled via Piketberg and Leopoldtville to Lamberts Bay for their onvernight stay. On 24 September they travelled via Clanwilliam, Citrusdal and Porterville back to Ceres, where they spent the last night at Matroosberg 4×4.
They returned home on 25 September. “Everybody is safely home after a wonderful Heritage Tour,” said Pierre Olivier, chairperson of the organising committee.
“Because of the previous week’s rain and snow, it was bitterly cold on Friday night and Saturday morning,” said Phillip Rosser, who helped plan the route. Especially the owners of the Ford Model Ts, the oldest cars on tour, experienced the freezing cold in the open vehicles.
“The rain of the previous week damaged the road to the reserve, but the beauty of the environment and the lovely guest cottages made up for any difficulties getting there,” said Japie van Rooyen, one of the founder members of the Southern Cape Old Car Club.
The days were warm and sunny during the rest of the tour, and the picturesque towns they drove through, visited or stayed in, made the tour very special.
“It was a fantastic tour,” said Olivier. “Everything went smoothly and we had no breakdowns, only a few minor things that could be easily fixed.”
According to Olivier, the flowers were magnificent in some areas. “The beauty of the flowers met all our expectations. But I was particularly impressed with the friendliness and hospitality of the people of Namaqualand.”
For Olivier the highlight of the tour was the gala event at Matroosberg 4×4 on the last night of the tour. “It was a great ending to the tour and everybody had a good time eating, socialising and even dancing.”
The 2018 Heritage Tour was supported by Montego Pet Nutrition, who also pledged support for the next two tours. Montego’s head office is in Graaff Reinet, which could be the basis for the 2019 Heritage Tour should it take place in the Eastern Cape.
