Grande Provence, the landmark heritage wine estate in Franschhoek, has excelled at the 2018 Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards securing a Double Gold and Gold medal for two of its wines.
The Double Gold medal, which is only awarded to 10% of the entrants, was garnered by the flagship blend, The Grande Provence White 2016. British Master of Wine, Tim Atkin also lauded this wine in his highly regarded South Africa 2018 Special Report, awarding it a score of 91/100.
The Michelangelo Gold medallist is the acclaimed Grande Provence Chenin Blanc 2017. This relative newcomer to Grande Provence already made its mark in the medals stakes earlier this year clinching Gold at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.
The two Grande Provence winners were among the record number of 2 225 wines, the biggest line-up ever since the Michelangelo competition’s inception 22 years ago. The Michelangelo awards differentiates itself from other wine competitions by inviting predominantly international experts to judge the wines. The judging panel comprises British Masters of Wine, sommeliers, wine and spirits producers, educators and influential journalists from Europe, the Far East and the Americas.
The Grande Provence White 2016 is a rich, full bodied Franschhoek blend of mostly Chenin Blanc from a 33 year old vineyard, Viognier and Chardonnay. Tim Atkin MW describes the wine as an “impressive blend” that is “musky, aromatic and stylistically oaked, with layers of wax, pear and apricot”. The wine will be released towards the end of the year at a cellar door price of R410.
The Grande Provence Chenin Blanc 2017 is crafted in a vibrant, fruit driven style. This wine captures the classic characteristics and purity of Chenin Blanc in a manner that is accessible, yet complex. It is available at a cellar door price of R95 per bottle.
