TOKARA has been recognised as one of South Africa’s top olive oil producers making the cut in the 2018 ABSA Top 10 with its Mission Single Variety Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
The TOKARA Mission olive oil was one of just three contenders to receive a Gold medal in the Delicate category of the 2018 SA Olive Awards. Being an Absa Top 10 winner is a remarkable achievement and confirmation that their oil is of the highest quality.
TOKARA’s 2018 Mission olive oil is mild and gentle with a finely balanced grassy, herbaceous character. It is one of two single variety oils and two full flavoured blends produced from TOKARA olive groves on the foothills of the Simonsberg.
TOKARA is the home of exceptional wines, olive oil and top notch dining on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. Its olive oil journey began in 2000 when co-owner Anne-Marie Ferreira decided to produce single variety oils that would set them apart from the handful of South African olive oil producers at the time. TOKARA focuses primarily on Tuscan varieties, each with its own distinctive character and flavour profile.
TOKARA’s olive oils were among the top achievers in the recent 2018 Sol d’Oro Southern Hemisphere extra virgin olive oil competition, when South Africa swept the board winning all the coveted competition medals. The TOKARA Premium blend secured a medal while the Mission received a special mention in this competition which is dedicated to extra virgin olive oils produced in countries south of the Equator.
TOKARA olive oil master and operations manager, Gert van Dyk, is passionate about South African olive oil.
“Some of the finest quality olive oils in the world are produced on home soil, yet many South Africans tend to think that ‘real’ extra virgin olive oil can only come from the Mediterranean,” says van Dyk, who makes it his mission to change this mindset with every olive oil tasting at TOKARA.
