KNYSNA FIRE UPDATE 3/11/18 20:00

Emergency Services teams are attending to a fire at Buffelsnek (+- 45km from Knysna) and are still dealing with the fire at the dump site.

The smoke over Knysna comes from these fires.

The Fire Department’s telephone lines are under severe strain. The department is aware of these fires and firefighters are on the ground battling the blazes.

Garden Route DM JOC Wildfire Update 2018/11/03 @ 19:10

1)            OUTENIQUA WILDFIRE – Most of the fire-lines only require mopping-up. There are however hotspots at Beervlei, Buffelsnek, Glenbarrie, Step-aside and Witfontein. These will be attended to and monitored throughout the evening.

2)            JONKERSBERG WILDFIRE – The area around the fire lines and infrastructure is safe. Fire in the plantation is still active. MTO teams will actively work to extinguish the fires throughout the evening.

3)            DE VLUGT WILDFIRE – There are hotspots and active fire-lines in this area. Firefighters are attending to these and back-burns might be started as an extinguishing method if the weather allows.

4)            GARCIA PASS / KRUISRIVIER / GROOTVADERSBOS WILDFIRE – Active fire-lines in these areas. Westerly wind could pose a threat to infrastructure. No imminent danger to humans or infrastructure in other sections of these areas at this stage. Firefighters will continue with firefighting throughout the evening. There is one Incident Management Team coordinating firefighting efforts in these areas.

 5)           GONDWANA WILDFIRE – Fire jumped the control lines and are burning towards Herbertsdale. Firefighters will be actively busy throughout the evening to ensure that they safeguard humans and infrastructure.

UPDATE ON POWER OUTAGES IN GEORGE

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The current fire in the Outeniqua Mountain is about 1km away from the power transmission substation that supplies electricity to Oudtshoorn. Should the fore move 500m closer to the sub-station, electricity supply to Oudtshoorn will be switched off. We’ll keep you posted about any developments.

Garden Route District Municipality JOC Update 2018/11/03 @ 09h30

Smoke remains over George.  Wind direction will turn this afternoon after 2pm to SE and moderate (9km per hour) and it is expected to push smoke away.

Eastern Cape this morning urgently requested release of one spotter plane and one huey helicopter to Clarkson (infrastructure and lives under serious threat) – these aerial resources will be stood down and returned to George as soon as the situation has been stabilized.

Resources: Working on Fire has commissioned additional resources to assist – another 100 firefighters will be arriving tomorrow.

GEELHOUTBOOM moving towards Jonkersberg – Bombers have been dispatched. Farm houses will be evacuated as a precautionary measure once the fire reaches the trigger point set by Incident Management Team (IMT).

HOOGEKRAAL (KNYSNA) – Teams busy mopping-up operations. One fire line of concern was anchored and contained during evening operations.

FARLEIGH – fire is under control with mopping up operations underway.

YELLOW WOOD TIMBERS – Smoke in the area because of sawdust burning but the fire is contained.

DE VLUGT (Northern Line) BUFFELSNEK – flared up and ground crews are attempting to suppress and contain. No infrastructure under threat.

DE VLUGT (Southern Line) moving in a southerly direction, has flared up and poses a  shortterm threat to Sonskynvalley Village. Evacuation not yet activated but being prepared for. Aerial resources currently not available due to smoke.

SANDF Oryx will be dispatched to assist when possible.

GOUDVELD – Fire spreading in southerly direction around and between broken indigenous forest. Protea Valley Bosdorp is being evacuated. Line is extremely long and very difficult to contain. Line which was moving south below the indigenous forest in a thin finger of unmanaged land was contained and made safe in the evening.

LOUVAIN AND EP VAN ROOYEN – The fire is contained, mopping-up operations underway.

N9 – Mopping up operations underway.

GROENKLOOF – West Coast District Municipality and Garden Route DM busy with mopping-up operations underway.

GENEVAFONTEIN (GEORGE) Fire contained.

FERNRIDGE TO SAASVELD (GEORGE) Strike teams for the George Municipality will be attending to any flareups in this area. Fire contained. Mopping-up-operations underway.
