Driving tips when travelling long distances this festive season

With the December holidays around the corner and exceptional holiday destinations throughout South Africa to look forward to, safety on the road is of major importance.

The festive season is notorious for road accidents and the death toll on South African roads toppled 1 500 during the festive season last year. Motorists are urged to be vigilant and always put the safety of themselves and their passengers first.

Research shown most long-distance trips are generally 2 hours and longer or more than 200 km.

Chanele van Tonder, marketing head of Hertz South Africa, said that there are safeguards that travellers can take into consideration before heading to their  destination during this holiday season.

“Make sure your vehicle has been serviced before your trip, this includes checking your lights, brakes, wheels, windscreen wipers, air conditioning and engine. These procedures will ensure peace of mind for the driver and a hassle-free drive to your destination without any complications.”

Chanele also advises to plan your trip in advance. “Make sure you know which route you will be taking and which to avoid as traffic can play a huge role in adding a few unnecessary hours to your trip. Do not forget to check the weather the night before so you can dress comfortably while driving.”

If you leave in the early hours of the morning, make sure your lights are on and keep a safe following distance while travelling.

With the festivities approaching, ensure that you take regular breaks to fill up on fuel and get a snack to eat while you can. Be sure to share the drive with a co-driver so when you get tired, they can relieve you and continue to drive to your destination safely.

It is important to always obey the rules of the road. If you are not sure of the surrounding areas, always drive at least the standard speed limit unless stated otherwise. Do not overcrowd your car with too many things and allow enough space and room (especially in the back window) to see your major blind spots, according to Chanele.

Hiring a car for the festive season means that you can travel to your destination in comfort and style, safe in the knowledge you are driving a fully serviced and maintained reliable car.

“Passenger safety is a top priority for Hertz Rent A Car. Hertz vehicles are regularly inspected and serviced by professionals, verifying every vehicle is up to manufacturer safety standards. Your destination is your reward for safe driving,” says Chanele.

At Hertz Rent A Car you can also add rental options for you and your family’s safety, protection and convenience. These include GPS, bicycle holders, carriers, and child safety seats. For a small fee you can also apply for different types of assistance, including roadside, medical, legal, accommodation and directions. The booking agent will send a link to your phone which will allow you to access the Mobile Assist App and this will be available for you until you return the vehicle.
