Klawer Wine Cellar is situated right next to the N7 just before entering the Matzikama region. Surrounded by the scenic views of the Olifants River Valley, visitors are guaranteed a very quaint and pleasant visit.
They offer a wide variety of wine at affordable prices, a complimentary wine tasting and a “winetastic” experience you will never forget.
This wine tasting wouldn’t be possible without dedicated winemakers. On December 2018 the cellar welcomed new winemaker Wouter Loubser to the team, and they are super excited to have him on board.
Loubser was born and raised in Brackenfell in the Western Cape. He is 27 years old and a man with a lot of enthusiasm regarding wine. He went to Boland Agricultural High School in Paarl and studied at Elsenburg College. He worked at several cellars, gaining experience and doing what he loves most. His last career move was from OVK Keimoes to Klawer Cellars.
Loubser realised that he always had a passion for wine making. To him, wine making expresses his personality and identity and he can use his creativity to the fullest.
Loubser loves ice cold Chardonnay when he is relaxing at home or going away with friends for a weekend. He also believes that Chardonnay fits his personality best and that this delicious wine is a versatile cultivar.
Loubser adds: “Some of the greatest MCC’s is made with Chardonnay. You can add a little wood to it or leave it nice and unwooded. Just as you like it.”
The best achievement for Loubser was in 2018 when he was part of the team that won the Pietman Hugo trophy, the Sauvignon Blanc trophy and the award for best white blend at the Young WineMakers show.
Except for Chardonnay, he would also definitely consider experimenting with Shiraz.
“It’s an elegant variety. Either you use it in a blend or on its own. There are so many components to this cultivar.”
Over the past years, he was influenced by a lot of winemakers.
“There are really so many and it would not be fair to point out one or two. I’ve learned something new from each and every winemaker that crossed paths with me.”
Loubser’s winemaking philosophy includes being able to make wine for different types of clients. He also believes that wine should be enjoyed and everybody has their own preferences.
“My guilty pleasure is popcorn and a buttery Chardonnay and yes, Chardonnay is my favorite wine,” said Loubser.
The staff at Klawer Wine Cellar can’t wait to taste the fantastic wine that Wouter is going to make.
The cellar also has the most beautiful green lawns beneath towering trees and umbrellas, the perfect spot for a picnic with family or friends. You can look forward to sipping exquisite wine in a relaxed atmosphere.
With great wine, good food, music, and celebration in the midst of a loving circle of family and friends, you are bound to have a good time!
