We are colourful, and that’s great!

We are a colourful bunch living together in South Africa. We’re all different, not just in terms of race, but also in terms of culture and religion, and even further than that, in terms of our characteristics, interests and passions.

Being this diverse as a nation is truly something that makes us stronger, together. Let’s find unity in diversity. We are unique, we are diverse, we are LekkeDifferent.

By the way, if you haven’t heard about the LekkeDifferent campaign yet, listen up. This might be worth writing home about, or even something that your grandmother will enjoy to hear about the next time you meet her for a cup of tea. But, above all, this is something that has the potential to create a positive change in South Africa and something that might actually teach us how to really love our neighbours.

To celebrate South Africa’s richness in diversity, the Federation of Governing Bodies of South African Schools (FEDSAS) launched a social media campaign that emphasizes the wonder of being unique. Learners are motivated to celebrate their uniqueness and diversity by sharing their stories on social media about what makes them unique.

“The idea behind the LekkeDifferent campaign is to get schools – and the country as a whole – to steer away from shining the spotlight on racism and to rather focus on how wonderful diversity is and how much poorer we would be without it,” explains Jaco Deacon, deputy CEO at FEDSAS. In other words, the idea is to celebrate being unique while at the same time embracing diversity.

If you would like to become a part of the #LekkeDifferent campaign, post a photo or video on your Instagram or Facebook page and tell your story on how unique you are, but that you also have best friends who are different. Remember to use the hashtags #LekkeAnders or #LekkeDifferent and also tag FEDSAS and LekkeDifferent in your posts.

You can follow LekkeDifferent on Facebook (LekkeDifferent) and Instagram (lekkedifferent) to stay up-to-date with the latest news.
