Going on holiday can be an alarming thought, especially if you are on a budget. But your getaway doesn’t have to break the bank.
With careful planning and savvy solutions, travelling may not be so tough on the finances as you may think. Keep in mind that road trips are much cheaper than flying. Also, finding a reliable ride is especially important when you’re driving with children.
Chanele van Tonder, Firefly’s marketing executive, and her team composed a list of clever tips for an affordable holiday.
Choose your stay. Always choose Airbnb or self-catering accommodation instead of hotels. Yes, staying at hotels seems far more glamorous and tempting, but they are not as cost-efficient or spacious for you and your family as self-catering accommodation. Self-catering establishments often have gardens and other amenities for the young ones to enjoy.
Ditch restaurants – at least for the most part. Cooking is far cheaper than eating out. You can buy food from the grocery store and make a nice, home-cooked meal. If cooking is not your thing, you can also look at street food or take-aways, which is normally way more cost-effective. The more you save on food, the more you can spend on activities!
Plan and book activities in advance. When you plan your activities before you leave, you will be able to plan your budget. If you book your activities at your destination, it may end up costing more than you planned. You should also be on the look-out for special deals and promotions that may run during your visit. Off-season prices may differ dramatically from those in high season.
Draw up a holiday budget. If you work out how much money you have to spend during your holiday on accommodation, food etc. when planning, it will lower stress knowing that you won’t run out of money mid-trip. A good tip to keep in mind is to always over-budget so that you increase your chances of ending up with extra spending money instead of running out.
Last, but not least, consider going on holiday off-season. Prices for flights, accommodation and even activities usually drops considerably during this time. You will be able to go on vacation for longer and even the best holiday spots won’t be overcrowded – it’s a win-win situation!
