Feels like not so long ago that we were bundled up in front of the fireplace with warm socks and cups of hot chocolate.
Well, not so surprisingly, winter is around the corner once again. When we think about going on holiday, we might envision long walks on the beach and going for a dip in the ocean after sunbathing. But there are actually plenty of reasons why going on holiday during the winter months are a splendid idea.
Chanele van Tonder, Firefly’s marketing executive, and her team composed a list of reasons why going on holiday during the colder months may be an excellent idea for you, and your bank account!
Getaways at a fraction of the price! Between May and August the prices of holiday accommodation drop significantly alongside the temperature. Why settle for an uncomfortable bed and not-so-great meals in peak season when you can relax in luxury and eat gourmet food when it’s a little cooler? It is also not as overcrowded as in summer time. No one wants to wait for hours just to get into a restaurant, right?
It’s prime time for a safari! In the dry winter months, animals normally come out of their shelters to search for water and food. This means that these animals are predictably seen at certain places and so your chances of finding them increase as the dry season progresses. Animals like elephants will trek for hundreds of kilometers in search of water and fresh grass. This way you will have no problem getting close to nature’s most beautiful creatures and you also won’t have a problem with being outside in hot weather conditions.
Snow! Snow isn’t as common in South-Africa as in some other countries and you usually don’t get to see it falling in your front yard! This makes actually seeing it up close quite an experience – even for adults! When the winter is in full force, you won’t have to search too far to get to a mountain that has a beautiful white blanket of snow crystals you and your little ones can play with!
It’s whale-watching season. From False Bay to Hermanus, the beasts of the deep enjoy the warm waters during the colder seasons. They can be spotted from June onwards, before the peak of their season culminates with the Hermanus Whale Festival at the end of September. Seeing them and experiencing their greatness is a brilliant experience – and it’s absolutely free!
If that doesn’t convince you, South African winters isn’t even really that cold. Temperatures usually still hover around 20 °C during the day, which is actually pretty nice, especially if you come from countries like the UK! There is a reason it’s known as sunny South Africa!
