Baleia Wines is delighted to announce that their Baleia Sauvignon Blanc was awarded the Best Sauvignon Blanc in a Unique Terroir at the annual Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards.
The results were announced on 1 August 2019 during an awards lunch at Anura Vineyards in Klapmuts.
The Novare South African Terroir Wine Awards were created to define the various terroir types of the Cape and celebrates wines that portray the uniqueness of South Africa’s diverse terroir. All wines that are entered must be a certified Wine of Origin from a specific single vineyard, estate, ward or small district not divided into wards.
Baleia’s lively Sauvignon Blanc, with green apple, passion-fruit aromas and crisp, green litchi flavours on the palate, was made from grapes picked on Valentine’s day 2019, says winemaker and general manager Gunter Schultz.
The wine grabbed the attention of some of South Africa’s most esteemed wine enthusiasts. The prestigious awards ceremony was judged by Jeff Grier (chairperson), David Biggs, Narina Cloete, Sandile Mkhwanazi and Anton Swarts.
Schultz and his team are elated with the outcome of the Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards. “On arrival at the winery, the flavours we captured in our grape press took me back to a vintage I assisted in New Zealand in April 1999! From there on in it was about preservation of flavour and minimal intervention,” he said about the winemaking process.
Baleia’s vineyards, situated 10km north of St Sebastian Bay on the Cape South Coast, are uniquely situated on the lower Duivenhoks River. As the only wine-producing farm in the region, their main objective is to produce wines of exceptional quality and unique terroir that enhance your food experience. Year-round winds from the Indian Ocean and limestone soils are unique to the vineyard’s location. It is their truly exemplary terroir which gives them the opportunity to create non-replicable wines.
Baleia selects their cultivar clones carefully, and they bottle quality, premium wine every time. Their extensive wine range includes 2019 Deborah Rose, 2015 Inge Chardonnay, 2014 Erhard Pinot Noir, 2017 Sebastian, 2017 Syrah and their 2017 Tempranillo.
Other recent awards won by Baleia Wines include the Gold Wine awards (Gold for their Sauvignon Blanc 2019 and Deborah 2019) and 91 points awarded by Tim Atkin for the Sauvignon Blanc 2019.
The Baleia Sauvignon Blanc 2019 will be available for sale from the 1st of September and orders can be placed by emailing admin@baleiawines.com or contacting them on 028 713 1214. Alternatively visit their tasting room to meet the team.
