TOKARA, the family owned Stellenbosch wine estate, has staked its claim as one of South Africa’s best Sauvignon Blanc producers after securing its 4th FNB Sauvignon Banc TOP 10 award.
All four TOKARA winners are Reserve Collection Elgin Sauvignon Blancs and the soon to be released 2019 vintage is the latest to join the venerable Top 10 line-up. The wine made this year’s cut out of 183 entries in the highly contested annual competition.
This is winemaker Stuart Botha’s second consecutive TOKARA Top 10 vintage after his 2018 triumph last year. The other Top 10 winners are from the 2015 and 2016 vintages.
All these wines stem from TOKARA’s Highlands farm in Elgin, an area producing some of the best cool climate renditions of this variety, with fresh acidity and purity of fruit in perfect balance. TOKARA’s Sauvignon Blanc prowess attests to the team’s single minded focus on creating wines that express their true sense of place.
“Our Elgin Sauvignon Blanc is a beacon of all things cool-climate. The 2019 vintage has an amazing freshness as the wine enters the palate, with zesty grapefruit flavours leading to a creamy mid-palate and a lingering crisp finish,” says Botha.
This 100% Sauvignon Blanc entices with inviting aromas of passion fruit and blackcurrant leaf subtly interplayed with lemongrass and elderflower.
The wine shows remarkable ageability and will evolve further with correct cellaring over the next few years.
