TOKARA excels at 2019 Six Nations Wine Challenge

TOKARA has excelled as a proud South African flag bearer against some of the best wines in the New World, with two medal winners at the 2019 Six Nations Wine Challenge in Australia.

Top TOKARA performer as a Double Gold Runner-up is the flagship Director’s Reserve Red 2015 with the Reserve Collection Elgin Sauvignon Blanc 2018 bringing home a Gold medal.

Since its maiden 2003 vintage, the Cabernet Sauvignon driven Director’s Reserve Red has grown in stature as a world class Bordeaux-style blend with a string of accolades in tow. The stand out 2015 vintage is a consummate blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (71%), Merlot (15%), Petit Verdot (7%), Malbec (4%) and Cabernet Franc (3%) from TOKARA’s prized vineyard blocks in Stellenbosch. The wine has intense aromas of red and black fruits with hints of dried herbs, baking spice and graphite. It enters the palate with amazing clarity, ending with fine, firm tannins, boding well for further ageing potential for 10 years or more.

The Reserve Collection Elgin Sauvignon Blanc 2018 stems from TOKARA’s Highlands farm in Elgin. This cool climate region produces some of the best renditions of this variety, with fresh acidity and purity of fruit in perfect balance.

“There is an amazing freshness as the wine enters the palate, with clean citrus flavours leading to a creamy mid-palate and a lingering crisp finish. This Sauvignon Blanc shows remarkable ageability and will evolve with correct cellaring over the next few years,” says winemaker Stuart Botha.

The 2018 vintage is a South African Top 10 Sauvignon Blanc and boasts a Gold medal from the Sommelier Wine Awards in the UK.

The Six Nations Challenge is an annual competition featuring wines from Australia, Canada, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA. It recognises and showcases the “very best of the best” New World wines, promoting their outstanding quality, diversity and richness.

Wines are entered into this competition by invitation only and a total of 600 wines are judged by a panel comprising a representative from each participating country. Every year the judges are invited to choose 100 wines that represent the best of their respective countries. South Africa is represented on the panel by well-known wine commentator, Michael Fridjhon.
