The Members’ Council of SWD Cricket by means of an Ordinary Round Robin Resolution has voted in favour of the cancellation of the planned cricket leagues of SWD Cricket for the 2020/21 season because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The planned league competition for the 2020/21 season was tabled at a Cricket Committee meeting of SWD Cricket that was held on 3 February 2021 and clubs were invited to participate in a survey where they were invited to respond to relevant questions. The questions on the survey relates to the he capacity of clubs to properly train and/or prepare for the planned competition starting on 6 March 2021, the capacity of clubs to ensure and guarantee that Covid-19 return to train/play protocols will be adhered to, their capacity to ensure and guarantee that travelling to and from venue will be in accordance with Covid-19 return to train/play protocols and the availability of facilities for scheduling fixtures during the month of March 2021.
Based on the concept competition and set protocol requirements the clubs were also requested to respond whether they will be able to accept responsibility and liability for to ensure the safety of all participants.
According to the SWD Cricket Chief Executive Officer, Albertus Kennedy, the majority of the clubs voted in favour of the cancellation of the planned leagues. “A transparent process was followed and it was evident that the risks and limited capacities to ensure the safety of players were too big” he commented.
