Lions signal early intent in Stellenbosch

STELLENBOSCH, 20 April 2019 – Defending champions Central Gauteng started the 2021 SA Senior A-Division Inter-Provincial with a bang, while KwaZulu-Natal and Western Province reignited their rivalry in the Super Seniors division on day one at Stellenbosch Golf Club.

GolfRSA adopted a Single Medal Match Play format to facilitate the Senior and Super Senior A- & B-Division Inter-Provincials this year under the current Covid-19 regulations.

The eight-strong Central Gauteng squad got their bid for a fifth successive title underway in convincing fashion on Tuesday, mowing down Southern Cape and Boland 5 – 3 to celebrate double success.

Schalk Naude’s 76 earned him points against Fanus Pauw from Southern Cape and Boland’s Franz Lobhauer, while Neil Homann also doubled up with a round of 70, finishing six shots better than Sean Baker from Southern Cape and eight strokes clear of Adrian Kuiper’s opening effort.

Craig Kamps was the other two-time winner on the day, carding 72 to win against Stanley de Beer and Boland’s Francois Hanekom.

Stephen Johnston and Greg Gleeson pocketed 2 more points against Southern Cape, while Jock Wellington and Sean Quigly closed out the match against Boland.

Southern Cape made up for their loss against Lions with a comprehensive 6 – 2 result against Boland, with Deon de Villiers, Douglas Griffin, Johan Marais, Pauw, Baker and De Beer collecting points.

Mark Louw and recent Western Province Senior Masters champion Greg Woodbridge anchored the Western Province team with a pair of 68s to help Western Province to a 5 – 3 victory over Eastern Province and a 5.5 – 2.5 result against Border.

Western Province No 1 Cameron Johnston carded 72 to edge out Attie Burger from Eastern Province by one shot, and Border’s Lidesh Pillay by six. Giles Buchanan banked 1 point, while Jonathan Bernard and Deon Brown both halved their games against Eastern Province. Buchanan halved against Dion Kahts with Craig Poulton and Deon Brown securing the last 2 points.

Mzuyanda Zingela (72), Rowlin Adonis (73), Ryno Ferreira (73) and Attie Burger (73) were on the winning side for Eastern Province, but Martin van Seumeren (82), Johan Vosloo (75), Dion Kahts (83) and Duncan Neil (75) balanced the scales for Border to force a 4-all draw.

In the final match, KwaZulu-Natal also threw their name in the hat with a 5.5 – 2.5 result against Gauteng North.

Guy O’Connor (84), Basil Naidoo (78), Keith Forde (75), Murray Gilson (83) and 2021 Senior Players Championship winner Lyall McNeill (83) delivered the winning blows, and Sean Fenger secured half a point when he drew against Gerhard Strydom.

Central Gauteng will have a three-way tussle with KwaZulu-Natal and Border in round two, Boland will go to battle against Gauteng North and Eastern Province, while Southern Cape takes on Western Province on Wednesday.

SUPER SENIORS

Two years ago KwaZulu-Natal beat Western Province by 1.5 points to triumph at Wingate Park and the rivalry is back on with both teams scoring convincing victories on day one.

Herman September (79), Richard Brooker (76), Henry Trevena (74) and Brian Mamphies (70) delivered a whitewash for Western Province against 2018 champions Southern Cape, while Richard Nel (82), Grant Lister-James (83) and Lynton Beckett (78) ensured that KwaZulu-Natal got off the mark with a 3 – 1 winning start against Border.

Meanwhile Central Gauteng edged Gauteng North 2.5 – 1.5 to bank their first point.

KwaZulu-Natal, Western Province and the Super Lions will hope to keep their winning streak alive when they face Southern Cape, Gauteng North and Border respectively on day two.
