Garden Route Film Commission and The International Tourism Film Festival Africa (ITFFA) Offer Garden Route Film talent a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

With the introduction of The Young Video Creatives Student Challenge, the Garden Route Film Commission (GRFC), the International Tourism Film Festival Africa (ITFFA) (taking place in Cape Town on the 2-5 May), Nikon, South Africa, and Value Film Fleet joined together to support the expansion of filmmaking abilities in the province in the next years.

Competition Finalist – Grenville Jantjies from Heidelberg Western Cape.

A competition was designed to give young video creators from the Garden Route a chance to showcase and develop their skills in video content creation and marketing while also providing them with a unique and exciting experience of traveling to Cape Town as well as a chance to win up to R30 000 in cash prizes. The objective is so they can shoot NIKON/ITFFA-branded promos and showreels showcasing the venue and its surroundings as a destination of choice for a visitor or a client.

Competition Finalist – Tarryn Erasmus, from Mossel Bay Western Cape

Two students, Grenville Jantjies from Hessequa and Tarryn Erasmus, from Mossel Bay, were the two-youth selected from the entire Garden Route to compete in this iconic competition and got to join the other Young Creatives for an opportunity of a lifetime by learning key skills in video creation, marketing, and film production, with their costs sponsored by the Garden Route Film Commission.

The Young Video Creatives Student Challenge sees teams staying in secret locations in Constantia and Bantry Bay and, in survivor style, competing in a series of challenges designed to test their creativity, teamwork, and marketing skills.

The First Challenge, which has already taken place, will see winners (winners to be announced at the ITFFA awards ceremony on the 5th May in Cape Town) walk off with a cash prize of R10,000, and the Second Challenge, which Grenville Jantjies and Tarren Erasmus have qualified for, has a cash prize of R20,000, which is just more of an incentive to encourage the Young Creatives to try their best and to challenge themselves with the new skills they have inquired about.

“You guys are awesome, and I salute you for being part of my journey toward making my dreams come to life. I highly appreciate all you’re doing in my life”. Stated Grenville Jantjies from Heidelberg in the Western Cape.

Garden Route candidate Tarren Erasmus replied, “As a young woman – I am honoured I was able to be part of the “Young Creative Students Challenge” and have established relationships with highly skilled individuals that helped me develop my skills for the better. I thank the Garden Route Film Commission for making this possible. You guys turned my worry into hope”.

Chairperson of the Garden Route Film Commission, Patrick Walton, said, “Skills development in the film industry is vital in our aim to increase local crew with specialized skills in key areas of the industry that will remain with residents in the Garden Route and become the core team that services and attracts more local and international productions to the Garden Route area”.

James Byrne, the co-founding director of the ITFFA says. “We as the ITFFA, in partnership with NIKON South Africa, want to be instrumental in equipping the youth to develop the necessary skillsets they require, and to provide them with the opportunities, that can see them gainfully employed and financially independent. We are grateful to the Garden Route Film Commission for sharing in this journey with us”.
