George van Heerden and Annerie Dercksen scoop Garden Route Badgers top awards

Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers, batting hero George van Heerden, won the prestigious Garden Route Badgers Player of the Season award at their annual awards breakfast ceremony that was held at the Wilderness Hotel in George on Saturday morning. Proteas Women all-rounder, Annerie Dercksen, who excelled for the Proteas women’s team at international level and was a star player for the Garden Route Badgers women’s team in the Hollywoodbets professional women’s competition won the Garden Route Badgers Women’s player of the season award.

George van Heerden wins the award as Garden Route professional men’s player of the season

Van Heerden was the top runs scorer for the Badgers across all formats and was the overall top runs scorer in the Division 2 Four day competition – he scored 515 runs with a highest score of 174 at an average of 64.37 with two centuries and two half-centuries.  Dercksen also received the Simon Swigelaar Floating Trophy for her outstanding achievements – including the award as ICC newcomer of the Year for 2024.

Pieter Stuurman (Club and Facilities Coordinator), Zenobia Nel (Executive Assistant and HR Administrator) and Albertus Kennedy (Chief Executive Officer) receive the Twenty Years Continuous Service Certificate.

Special Merit Awards were awarded to:

  • Jezé Campher (Môrester Senior Secondary School) who received the award as batter- and all-rounder of the tournament in the Gold Section of the CSA Girls u/16 National tournament that was hosted in Johannesburg during December 2024.
  • Mariana Breedt (Outeniqua High School) and Emmy-Kay Samson (Oudtshoorn School of Skills) for being selected for the SA Schools Fillies Girls’/19 team that was selected upon conclusion of the CSA Girls u/19 National tournament that was hosted in Durban during December 2024.
  • Enathi Kitshini (Thembalethu Hub), Shirwin Plaatjies (Bridgton Hub) and Keano Coerecius (Bridgton Hub) for being selected for the SA Hub team that participated in the Schools SA20 Knock-out competition.
  • Enathi Kitshini: (Thembalethu High) selected for the Southern Superstars team that participated in the CSA Cubs that was hosted in Stellenbosch during January 2025, the SA Schools XI that was selected upon conclusion of the CSA Khaya Majola u/19 National tournament that was hosted in Cape Town during December 2024 and the SA U/19 team

     –     Elridge Booysen appointed as Assistant Coach for the SA Hub that participated in the     

Emmy-Kay Samson and Marianna Breedt, who was selected for the SA Schools Girls Fillies U/19 team receive a Special Merit Award from Mr Loyiso Shoto (Independent Director at SWD Cricket)

Schools SA20 Knock-out competition

     –    Wynand de Ridder was appointed as Head Coach for the Southern Superstars team that participated in the CSA Cubs, which was hosted in Stellenbosch during January        2025.

     –    Pieter Stuurman appointed as the Head Coach of the CSA Rural team

     –    Anoxolo Kitshini selected for the CSA Rural team

  • Officiated on the CSA Reserve panel
  • Officiated on the ICC International panel
  • Appointed to officiate in the ICC Women’s u/19 World Cup in Malysia in January 2025
  • Appointed to officiate the international series in all formats between South Africa and England in December 2024
  • ICC men’s T20 International debut; September 2024 in Tanzania in September 2024.

      –   André Olivier – officiated on the CSA First Class panel

      –   Yolandi van der Westhuizen, who was appointed as the Head Coach of the SA.  Schools Fillies Girls’/19 team that was selected upon conclusion of the CSA.  Girls u/19 National tournament that was hosted in Durban during December 2024.

      –   George van Heerden was selected for the SA Emerging team that toured Bangladesh in May and June 2025.

     –    Mieke de Ridder – represented the Proteas in various white ball series, including the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE.

     –    Annerie Dercksen – represented the Proteas across all formats – including the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE, and she received the awards as ICC newcomer of the Year for 2024.

Three employees of the company – Albertus Kennedy (Chief Executive Officer), Pieter Stuurman (Club and Facilities Coordinator), and Zenobia Nel (Executive Assistant and Human Resource Administrator) – received Twenty Year Continuous Service Certificates.

Ms Shireen Noble, who is involved in the Mini Cricket program for more than 30 years receives an Lifetime Achievement Award from Mr JP Rossouw (Lead Independent Director at SWD Cricket)

The 1979 Southern Cape Schools team received a Lifetime Achievement award as well as six coordinators with more than twenty years of service in the Mini Cricket program;  Shireen Noble (30 years), Regina Wicomb (30 years), Lavona Cloete (20 years), Glenda Stalmeester (20 years), Felicity Prins (20 years) and Meryl Daniels (20 years).

Ms Liesl Dercksen, the mother of Annerie who was with the Proteas in the West Indies , receives the Simon Swigelaar Lifetime Achievement award from Mr Colin Swigelaar

Several members who were involved in various capacities within the SWD Cricket structures who passed away during the past year were honored with a Roll of Honor Award. 

They were:

  • Granwin Scholtz: 5 February 1990 – 16 June 2024 (player/member at Riversdale CC)
  • Virgil Hector: 6 January 1951 – 31 August 2024 (member of Pacalsdorp United CC)
  • Willie Snyman: 11 June 1969 – 12 November 2024 (former fitness trainer of the SWD 2010 Academy intake)
  • Johnny Dalton: 26 October 1961 – 7 April 2024 (former chairman and player at Hartenbos CC)
  • Johannes Maruping: 10 February 1987 – 9 May 2025 (former groundsman at the Recreation Ground)
  • Jacobus Esau: 1 July 1958 – 7 January 2025 (former chairman of Dysselsdorp CC)
Leigh-Henry Meyer (from Union Stars CC) receives the Player of the Year Award in the premier league from Carlos Koeberg (Vice-President SWD Cricket)

Lee-Henry Meyer (Union Stars CC), for his outstanding bowling performances, was the Premier League player of the season, Berthal September (Heidelberg United CC) won the award for the Promotion League, Lesley Maksella (Western Hope CC) for Reserve League Division 1 and Carlton Rasmus (Beaufort West CC) for Reserve League Division 2.  Ricardo Majolla (Pacaltsdorp United CC) the T20 player of the season and Harolene Rhodes (Union Stars) – who scored the most runs  in the Women’s League– received the Award as Women’s Player of the Season.  Jané Winster (Union Stars CC) was the Women’s Division 1 T20 league player of the season and Kim Malgas (Knysna Cavaliers CC) the women’s division 2 T20 player of the season.  Miviwe Muteyi (Thembalethu CC) won the Women’s Division 2 T20 player of the season award.

  • Simon Hlwayi (from NMU Madibaz CC – the Club Groundsman of the Season)

Union Stars CC was the winners of the Fair Play Award whilst Pacaltsdorp United CC won the Operational Excellence Award.
