Knysna Municipality will begin temporary repair work on sections of Waterfront Drive and Grey-, Rawson-, Mortimer- and Clyde Streets in the coming weeks. “These repairs include restoring damaged sewer manholes and addressing areas affected by underground soil movement and sinkhole risks,” explained Acting Municipal Manager Dr Richard Martin.
Work is scheduled to begin on 26 November, starting at the Grey & Rawson Street intersection, and will continue into early December, ahead of the holiday season. B&V Contractors will be carrying out the repairs.
The essential repairs at each intersection is expected to take roughly three days to complete. Deeper and more complex sites, such as Mortimer Street, will require extra time for dewatering and stabilisation.
“Knysna’s sewer network may be out of sight, but it plays a crucial role in keeping the CBD running, supporting local businesses, traffic flow, services and the overall wellbeing of our community,” said Martin. “We understand that temporary closures and detours can be frustrating. But dealing with these issues now helps prevent sudden road collapses, bigger failures, and the costly consequences of ignoring weakened infrastructure.
“These upgrades, and their associated temporary road closures and detours, may test our patience in the short term,” Martin concluded. “They are, however, a necessary part of this process. Our subterranean infrastructure urgently needs attention. These works will help to keep our town safe, functional and ready for the busy festive season. Thank you for staying patient and staying alert on our roads.”
