SWD CRICKET BOARD ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (27 JULY 2013)

Mr Rudy Claassen
Mr Rudy Claassen

Rudy Claassen, was elected unopposed as President of the SWD Cricket Board, during the 23rd Annual General Meeting that was held on Saturday in Oudtshoorn. Claassen has served as president since September 2004. As a vote of confidence in the leadership of the organization John Komansi (Vice-President), Shael Laminie (Finances), Enrico Bell (Operations of Associated Bodies), Angus Roelfse (Local Leagues) and Llewellyn Louw (Club Affairs). Vuyani Maloi is the Black African Cricket Forum representative.

In his presidential report Claassen highlighted the awarding of full affiliate status on 2 February 2013 at the Cricket South Africa Annual General Meeting as the outstanding achievement of the past season.

In October 2012 the construction of new cloakrooms and players suites has been completed thanks to grants from the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund (Sport and Recreation) to the value of R750 000 and R300 000 from a new partner, the SA Sports Trust.

The flagship team, the SWD senior team had another good season in the Cricket South Africa provincial Three Day competition where the men from the Southern Cape again came very close in winning the trophy. The individual performance of Marcello Piedt who bagged 59 wickets in his debut season of first class cricket was complimented. The 19-year old Piedt was also awarded with an inclusion in the CSA National Academy intake for 2013.

During the past season SWD again hosted the CSA Academies tournament (for Southern provinces in September 2012) and also successfully hosted the USSA B-Week (in November 2012) and CSA Girls U/19 National tournament. Jean Heunis was selected for the SA Schools XI last year after the U/18 Coca Cola Khaya Majola cricket week and the 14-year old Miceala Andrews was included in the SA Schools Girls team and a bright future lies ahead for her.

The KFC Mini-cricket forms the foundation of the grass roots development program in the province. The SWD’s program received great recognition when Gary Moos, the Mini-cricket co-ordinator along with his colleague from Northerns was awarded as the best co-ordinators in the country during the recent KFC National Seminar that was held in Polokwane.

The SWDCB in the past financial year spent significant resources in enhancing and promoting the total spectrum of club cricket in the province. Club cricket is the cornerstone of cricket structures in the province and is the SWD’s strategic plan directed to provide opportunities for effective and active participation for all affiliated clubs to enhance a competitive cricket culture. The financial support towards clubs essential for the sustainment of cricket in the province and the SWDCB invested in various projects and programs.

The expenditure to clubs increased from R265,000 in 2011/12 to R870,000 in 2012/13. This figure made provision for an increase in grants to clubs but specifically infrastructure projects (playing and practice facilities), investment in coaching programs, provision of pitch covers, cricket and training equipment, cricket balls for leagues, transport grants as well as maintenance projects.

Besides the contribution from the SWDCB, which is primarily done with dedicated funding from Cricket South Africa, more than R500,000 was also spent on club capacity building projects with allocated funding from the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund. The SWDCB, also for the first time secured a sponsorship in the form of prize money for the respective league winners.

A new initiative was the introduction of the Club Excellence program where clubs were awarded with financial incentives in reaching specific objectives in an outcome based funding program. This program placed an emphasis in proper administrative and governance structures at clubs as well as the training and recruitment of officials such as umpires, scorers, coaches and ground staff. A further nine clubs will join the club development program this season. This is an initiative that is funded by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.

The SWDCB leadership and management are in process to address the very challenging issue of inclusion as a shareholder as part of Cricket Eastern Cape (Pty) Ltd (the Warriors). The present status is that the CEC Board of Directors recognized that SWD is entitled to a shareholding and resolved to ask the shareholders to consider the extent and detail of the shareholding. The entry of a third shareholder will dilute the current 50/50 (Eastern Province/Border) shareholding. Should it be decided in principle that SWD becomes a shareholder it will then be necessary to consider the % shareholding, staging of matches, directorships, cost implications and other relevant matters.

In his financial report, Mr Shael Laminie also presented positive figures. The total income for the 2012/13 financial year increased to more than R13mil and an operating surplus of R917,752 was reported.

The Council also approved the application of affiliation from Slangrivier Cricket Club as an affiliated club of the SWDCB.

SWD SIGNS LONWABO RODOLO

The 22-year old Lonwabo Rodolo is the only new face in the SWD line-up for the 2013/14 season. Rodolo, that was born at Alice in the Eastern Cape made his first class debut for Border in the 2010/11 season and played for Griquas last year.

He is a right-arm fast medium bowler who already played in 19 first class matches and bagged 53 wickets with a best bowling analysis of 5/51. He also played in eight Limited Over and five Twenty20 matches.

With the exception of Reece Williams and Phabhama Fojela, who were both released from the contracts, the rest of the squad that played last season will again be in the line-up for the new season. Sammy-Joe Avontuur and Erinn Ewerts that performed well in the club competition is again in contention for a spot in the provincial team. The rest of the contracted squad is: Ross McMillan, Luthando Mnyanda, Adrian McLaren, Brendon Louw, Glen Addicot, Marcello Piedt, Pieter Stuurman, Waldo Lategan, Douglas Baartman and Justin Jordaan. Other candidates for contention for a place in the team are Kobus Scholtz, Gareth Dukes, Ruan Stander and Lyndon Volkwyn.
