SWD draw with Border on Day 1 of Coke Week

Western Province’s Kyle Verreyn and Stefan Klopper of Northerns were the individual heroes of the opening day of the U19 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Pretoria on Wednesday.

Verreyn made the first century of the week when he was 100 not out for Western Province against Free State. He faced 104 balls and hit 16 fours and one six, as he guided his side to 284/6 declared.

Klopper took a remarkable seven wickets for 35 in 13.4 overs of offpsin bowling to post the best bowling figures of the day. The second best bowling came from Matthew Rohland of Griquas, also a spinner, who took 5/49 against Namibia .

The opening day of the week saw the batsmen dominate. Apart from Verreyn’s ton, there were 14 half centuries scored. Stephen Reeves (80 not out for KwaZulu-Natal Inland v Eastern Province); Benjamin Van Niekerk (79 for Mpumalanga v Limpopo); Michau de Preez (67 for Namibia v Griquas); Matthew Christensen (78 for Western Province v Free State) and Koot Pienaar (64 for Free State v Western Province) got big half centuries and will be looking to build on those scores in the rest of the week.

The first day of the week is given over to declaration cricket, and with the captains erring on the conservative side, there were only two results in the eight games played.

Namibia beat Griquas outright, while Northwest got a first innings win over Easterns.

Thursday’s play will also feature declaration cricket, The fixtures are: WP v Northerns, Gauteng v KZN Inland, EP v Boland, KZN v Free State, Mpumalanga v Easterns, Namibia v SWD, Border v Griquas, Northwest v Limpopo.
